"Digital Color Renditions" is a name I came up with to describe a new medium for portraiture and fine art. Each piece is created using the same process as my oil or pencil work. All my work (whether it be oil, pencil or this medium) start with a reference photograph. What makes it different is that I am not painting on canvas or drawing on paper but I am drawing on a computerized tablet (like a computerized sketchbook). I have two computer screens, one that has the reference photo and one as my “blank canvas.” Each piece is then hand drawn/painted in the same process I use for my pencil or oil work. Contrary to popular belief there is no part of any photograph in the image. They are not reproduced photographs, but hand painted digital paintings.
Please see sample of process.
This medium allows for wonderful flexibility in the creative process, from layout design, to color choices, to a graphic “feel.” The final outcome are hand drawn/painted original designs and portraits that are then printed on heavy-duty canvas stretched and wrapped over a 1 1/2" wood frame, then finished with a UV and water resistant dry lamination process. Each piece is then hand signed. After years of using the tablet professionally for product design, it was a natural medium for my initial greeting card designs. What people commented about the greeting cards was it’s unique graphic nature combined with an intense vibrancy of color, something they have never seen before, once described as “a mix of graphic design and fine art.” After seeing one of my card designs a client asked if their fine art portrait could be created using this technique? The creation of a new medium "Digital Color Renditions” for portraiture and fine art was born. They would make a wonderful addition to any house or barn and can be customized.
